Every scientist keeps a notebook. The Distilling Data Dump is ours, opened up: a collection of distillation research, guides and resources in a Google Shared Drive. It's for beginners learning the basics and for experienced distillers who want to sharpen their skills.
What's inside
- Step-by-step guides covering mashing, fermentation and distillation
- Recipes for a range of spirits, including whiskey, rum and fruit brandies
- Equipment lists and setup tips so you use the right tools
- Troubleshooting advice for common distilling problems
- Safety tips and best practices for distilling safely and legally
- Insights from seasoned moonshiners
Study it, then test it
Reading about distilling and running a controlled experiment are two different things. A still with a 110V or 220V element and a controller lets you follow a process step by step and repeat it. Compare your setup with the equipment lists. If a run doesn't behave, check the troubleshooting section, change one thing and try again. That's how a hobby becomes a craft, and how a little alchemy starts to look like real science.

Learn first, follow the law
Owning a still is legal in the US, but distilling alcohol requires federal (TTB) permits. The spirit recipes are for permitted distillers only. Stills also have lawful uses such as purifying water and making essential oils. Always follow federal, state and local law.
