The measuring side: parrot and hydrometer
A good scientist measures. A parrot sits at the end of the line and holds a hydrometer in the liquid as it comes off the still, so you can read it in real time instead of guessing. Watching those numbers move through a run is where the alchemy turns into data. It helps you understand how heat, vapor, and timing shape every cut you make.
Before you pay the deposit
- Make sure you have a 220V circuit where the still will run
- Decide what you'll use it for: water, essential oils, botanicals, or permitted fuel alcohol

Owning a still is legal in the United States. Producing alcohol requires federal (TTB) permits, and you must follow federal, state, and local law.
